The Ultimate Paradox

February 24, 2020, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” 1 Corinthians 15:10
The ultimate paradox of recovery is this: You have to surrender to win! Sounds odd, I know, but true it is. Many men and women expend great energy on a false assumption that our will-power alone can overcome any addiction, any hurt or hang-up. Many have “hit bottom” with this false assumption. Admitting our hurts, habits and hang-ups, and that we are powerless to fix them, is the first step of surrender. But recovery (my walk with Christ) is not an event; it’s a process and journey that repeats itself over and over again. In Celebrate Recovery, we experience again and again Step 7: Humbly ask God to remove all our short comings. The surrender is the dying of the flesh (our sin nature) and the victory is a new and growing life in Jesus. The spiritual fuel that makes this transformation possible is God’s grace. My favorite definition of grace comes from Philip Yancey’s book “What’s So Amazing About Grace.” Yancey states: “Grace means there is nothing we can do to make God love us more. And grace means there is nothing we can do to make God love us less.” If you are having trouble with surrender, check out CR. We meet every Friday night at Crossroads Church, starting at 6pm. God loves you; Jesus died for you; His spirit lives in you! Say “Yes” to Jesus! Dana Cramer // Celebrate Recovery at Crossroads Church
