Serve and be Served

July 23, 2018, By: Jimmy Scruggs

“Dear brothers, you have been given freedom: not freedom to do wrong, but freedom to love and serve each other.” Galatians 6:2
Celebrate Recovery is about service: who can I help today? One way we can be involved in service is by allowing people to serve (help) us. What? How is that being of service? Well, it works off the principle of giving back. What has been given to me, I give to you. When I first came into recovery (and still today at times) I had a very difficult time asking for help. It wasn’t necessarily about not wanting to bother people; it had more to do with my insecurity and fear, masquerading as fierce independence.  A couple of years went by and I had started sponsoring people, but I became concerned by their inability to ask for help. As I spoke to my sponsor about it he reminded me that I too was prone to this. He taught me a valuable lesson about service—when I don’t ask for help I deny someone else the opportunity to serve and I inadvertently cheapen their recovery process. The truth is we all need help at times. Can we be honest enough to admit it and become willing to seek and ask for help, no matter how long we have been in recovery? Don’t deny someone the opportunity to be of service to you! You need it and so do they! Question: Who do you need to bring into your life today to help you? Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for this journey. I may not be where I want to be, but I’m far from where I was. I pray that you use me to be of service, and humble me to ask for help when I need it. Amen. Dana Cramer // Celebrate Recovery at Crossroads
